Father and Son è un brano di Cat Stevens, pseudonimo di Steven Demetre Georgiou, o Yusuf Islam, contenuta nell’album Tea for the Tillerman del 1970 e inizialmente pubblicata come lato-B del singolo Moonshadow.
Storia e significato di Father and Son
La canzone racconta di un dialogo tra un padre e un figlio, il padre consiglia al figlio di restare a casa, sistemarsi e trovare una brava ragazza, dicendogli che questa è la vera strada per la felicità. Il figlio però sente di dover andar via per cercare la sua di strada, ed è frustrato perché suo padre non riesce a capire le sue motivazioni.
Stevens ha romanzato, in Father and Son, la storia del suo rapporto con suo padre Stavros Georgiou. Stravos gestiva un ristorante a Londra, dove Cat ha lavorato come cameriere fino a quando non ha firmato un contratto discografico all’età di 17 anni. Il padre Stavros, invece, sperava che il figlio rimanesse a prendersi cura dell’azienda di famiglia. Stevens ha dichiarato in un intervista del 2009:
“Gestiva un ristorante e io ero una pop star, quindi non stavo seguendo il percorso che aveva tracciato per me. Ma di certo non c’era alcun conflitto tra noi. Io lo amavo e lui amava me“.

Sebbene la canzone sia ispirata dalla sua esperienza, Cat aggiunse che suo padre, lo ha in realtà sempre lasciato fare quello che voleva. Father And Son è soprattutto per quelle persone che non riescono a liberarsi .
Cat Stevens ha originariamente scritto il brano come parte di un progetto musicale proposto con Nigel Hawthorne , chiamato Revolussia , ambientato durante la rivoluzione russa , e che avrebbe potuto anche diventare un film; la canzone parlava di un ragazzo che voleva unirsi alla rivoluzione contro la volontà del padre contadino conservatore .
La canzone è stato inserita al numero 408 nella ” Top 500 Best Songs of All Time ” di Rolling Stone
