Take Me to Church, testo e significato
Take Me to Church è una canzone del cantautore irlandese Hozier. È stata pubblicata come singolo di debutto il 13 settembre 2013, prima di essere presentata come title track del omonimo album del 2014.
Il musicista in difficoltà al momento della sua composizione, Hozier, ha scritto e registrato la canzone alle 2 di notte nella mansarda della casa dei suoi genitori nella contea di Wicklow.
I versi della canzone usano una terminologia religiosa per descrivere una relazione romantica, di fronte alla discriminazione della Chiesa. La canzone ha attirato l’attenzione della Rubyworks Records, tanto che il produttore, Rob Kirwan, ha collaborato con Hozier alla registrazione finale. Il testo è una metafora con richiami religiosi sulla fine di una storia d’amore:
«Ho trovato l’esperienza di innamorarsi o essere innamorati simile ad una morte, la morte di tutto. Ti guardi mentre muori in un modo meraviglioso, e sperimenti per un momento brevissimo, se ti guardi per un momento attraverso i loro occhi, che tutto ciò che pensavi di te se ne va. La canzone è uno sfogo sulla frustrazione di Hozier nei confronti dei precetti della Chiesa Cattolica. In un’intervista per Rolling Stone il cantante ha dichiarato:
Crescendo ho sempre notato l’ipocrisia della chiesa cattolica. La storia parla da sé, e crescendo ho maturato solo rabbia e frustrazione, e [nella canzone] ho semplicemente messo per iscritto questi sentimenti.

Il videoclip, del regista Brendan Canty, è stato pubblicato nel settembre 2013. Nel video, girato in bianco e nero vicino a Cork, in Irlanda, viene affrontato il tema dell’omofobia come atto di denuncia verso le discriminazioni omofobe in Russia, raccontando la storia d’amore di due ragazzi omosessuali che viene ostacolata da un gruppo estremista.
