Tears in Heaven, storia e significato
Tears in Heaven è una canzone del chitarrista, cantante e cantautore inglese Eric Clapton, scritta assieme al collega Will Jennings. Il brano è apparso nella colonna sonora del film Rush del 1991. Nel gennaio 1992, Clapton eseguì la canzone di fronte a un pubblico ai Bray Studios, Berkshire, Inghilterra per l’MTV Unplugged.
Tears in Heaven è tra le canzoni di maggior successo interpretate da Clapton e conquistò nel 1993, tre Grammy Awards: Registrazione dell’anno, Canzone dell’anno e Miglior interpretazione vocale maschile. Inoltre, il brano si trova al 362º posto della lista dei 500 migliori brani musicali secondo Rolling Stone.
Significato
Il testo struggente scritto da Clapton e Jennings è autobiografico e parla di una tragedia accaduta nella vita di Eric Clapton: la morte di suo figlio. Il 20 marzo 1991, il figlio di 4 anni di Clapton, Conor e la subrette italiana Lory Del Santo, morì dopo essere caduto dalla finestra del 53° piano di un appartamento di New York appartenente a un amico della madre di Conor. Dopo essersi isolato per un periodo, Clapton ha affrontato il dolore per la morte di suo figlio scrivendo “Tears in Heaven”, una catarsi per cercare liberarsi in parte del dolore.
